Personal Philosophy

My personal philosophy is founded on my commitment to deliver care to all those in need in a holistic and individualized manner. The philosophy is grounded on the belief in the respect and dignity of all people. Even though different cultures and societies ascribe to different beliefs and values, respecting each person, minority or majority, race, religion or class is essential in not only delivering care but also improving outcomes, community attitudes and health promotion. This worldview informs my approach to practice and patient care. I uphold the dignity of the patients I serve and believe that they should receive the best care regardless of their background.

I ascribe to Christianity and have faith in the foundations of Christianity. These foundations inform my approach to patient care. Hence, I believe healing is a holistic procedure. I respect all religions, and I have informed myself of the diverse beliefs different religious affiliations uphold. I believe that understanding the meaning of life through spirituality. I tend to approach it as having a deep sense of aliveness and interconnectedness with a higher power. From these beliefs, I learn to respect each individual with their unique ways of existence. My culture, on the other hand, informs my interactions especially on mutual respect and trust-building. I believe in establishing good interactions and relationships with people through collaboration and working together. Harmony builds up trust and influences positive personal development. For patients, the approach initiates holistic healing and influences the patient to have positive attitudes towards care and practitioners (Morley, 2019).

Nursing theory

Watson’s Theory of Care

The Humanistic model best aligns with my personal philosophy. The model is hinged on fostering physical health coupled with mental and emotional well-being (Hart, 2019). Also known as the holistic approach, the model upholds that patients can also grow healthily and creatively. The humanistic model is in line with my personal philosophy because of the interactions and relations I foster with my patients. The focus on the nurse-patient relationship equips the outcomes of nursing interventions by ensuring both the nurse and the patient are actively engaged (Monsen, Le, Handler, & Dean, 2017). The similarities are engrained in the creation of sustainable and positive interactions with the patient to facilitate holistic healing. Besides, the humanistic approach focuses on the individual as I do, and works to understand the needs of the individual and improve them.

Within the humanistic model, the emphasis is established on the foundations of having a good relationship with the patient. I ascribe to Watson’s theory of care within the humanistic model as it emphasizes being “concerned with promoting health, preventing illness, caring for the sick and restoring health.” The theory further holds that holistic care is pertinent in practice and patient care and proposes that nursing is focused on health promotion, preventing illness, caring for the sick, and restoring health (Cook, & Peden, 2017). These functions underline the need to take a holistic approach and foster interactions with patients and the community at large. The approach converges with my personal philosophy guides my day to day interactions with patients, their families and my community.

Focusing on the holistic well-being of the patient can be challenging but provides the most satisfaction. Some of the processes contributing to the approach of care as outlined by Watson include practicing loving-kindness, being authentically present, cultivating one’s spiritual and self-existence, developing and sustaining trusting and caring relationships and creating a supportive and healing environment on all levels (Pajnkihar et al., 2017). To effectively engage in my personal philosophy, I have to continuously practice the processes. Besides, Watson also defines her own hierarchy of needs which begin with survival needs followed by functional needs, progressing to the integrative needs and finally, the growth-seeking needs (Norman, Rossillo, & Skelton, 2016). Being able to assist with the gratification, these categories of needs enables a comprehensive delivery of holistic patient care.

Application

In my current practice, I get to interact with patients from within the community. While working on a patient, I noted that besides the injury he had attained, the patient was obese as well as members of the family. Both parents were overweight, and one has already been diagnosed with type II diabetes. The parents, however, seemed to discourage physical activity as it had resulted in the patient’s injury. While treating the patient, I factored in the perspectives of the parents and the need to not only help with the injury promote healthy habits and exercise to prevent illnesses such as diabetes. In my care plan, I included a meeting with the parents to emphasize on the need for healthy habits and wellness. In the case, the problem to be addressed was beyond the injured knee as patient and parent education was necessary. I managed to build a rapport with the patient, and the parents, leading to the creation of a routine that would help the children be physically active. During the process, I learned that even though the parents understood the risk, they did little to help the children. However, intervention centered on the well-being of the patient and the family set in motion holistic care.

Future Practice

My personal philosophy will help me understand the areas I work best. These areas include highly interactive clinical settings and community setups where my approach could help improve the quality of care delivered. Besides, as I progress, there are skills that I have to learn to effectively and sustainably apply the philosophy. This includes cross-cultural communication, fostering relationships, and working collaboratively with other practitioners and the patient. Watson’s theory of care and the comprehensive humanistic model will continue to influence how I interact and approach each case. With more focus on patient-centered care in the recent past, I believe my personal philosophy will progressively help me deliver sufficient and holistic care.
