Organizational culture is a crucial aspect of an organization, particularly to the success and health of stakeholders and the organization itself. Despite its significance, some aspects of an organizational culture act as a hindrance to organizational leadership. The major barrier to nursing leadership is the organizational structure. For instance, an institution with a centralized power structure often adheres to an inflexible model in care delivery (West, 2016). Such institutions have an inflexible operation model. Inflexible cultures are characterized by their inability to change. In such clinical settings, employees’ efforts are only focused on internal factors. As a result, only the leaders at the top level of the organization can affect any crucial organizational cultural change.

Vertical management systems have multiple management levels. While the multiple layers are crucial to enhancing the efficacy of organization decisions, they also derail policy enhancements and approval (Willcox et al., 2018), which nurse leaders initiate. In a sense, when nurse leader(s) brings up a critical policy change or clinical decision, the same has to receive approval from various management levels, which can often be time-consuming and frustrating. Therefore, nurse leaders in clinical settings with such organizational cultures can feel powerless when making important decisions.

Lastly, organizations whose leaders are labelled and belittled are presented with barriers to achieving their professional fulfillment and success (Hughes, 2016). Such cultures are characterized by a lack of leadership resources and are rarely visible in policymaking.  In essence, nurse leaders in these settings have no clarity of their roles and are also affected by constant uncertainty, restructuring, and upheavals. As a result, they are rendered powerless in enacting their leadership role
