Rationale for Assignment design:

The assignment is a Patchwork Text, consisting of two patches.  One reason for using this method of assessment is that it allows students to write the patches as the module progresses, thereby avoiding having one large assignment to do at the end of the taught part of the module.  To facilitate this, the topics covered in the taught sessions are in sequence with the order of the patches and you are advised to work on the patches over the course of the module.  Formative assessment sessions have been included in the module schedule to facilitate this.

The specified word limit for each patch (2,400 words) is advisory.  You can vary the amount you write for each patch slightly but you are advised not to deviate far from the recommended word count.  And you must not exceed the overall maximum word count, 4,800 words, for the whole assignment.

The University academic regulations state that: “In determining the text to be included within the maximum word limit, the following items are excluded:

·
abstracts;

·
data;

·
tables;

·
figures;

·
diagrams;

·
in-text references/citations (eg: “(Baxter 2016: 7 3-84)”)

·
footnotes/endnotes used for reference purposes and kept within reasonable limits;

·
list of references and/or bibliography;

·
appendices.

While the assignment consists of two distinct patches they should be integrated, or ‘stitched together’, to form a coherent piece: a patchwork.  Two ways of doing this are:

·
Using ‘signposting’ to guide reader as to what is in each patch and how they relate to each other. You can do this by giving each patch a short introduction and conclusion.

·
By carrying themes through the patches; e.g. one quite straightforward way to do this is to relate the discuss in both patches to a particular service user group. You can also, where appropriate, cross-reference to points you’ve made in other patch (e.g. ‘As discussed in Patch One… ‘).
