Nursing Personal Philosophy Matrix
Personal Philosophy of Nursing Paper Example
Nursing is interesting because of the intrinsic and lifelong commitment to promoting better living standards and health outcomes among people. Nursing has been an exciting profession since childhood, an interest I developed following a period when my cousin nursed my paternal grandfather before he passed on. I appreciated her effort in ensuring my grandfather had a person to talk to when all other family members were committed to working and school, brought food, administered medication, and recorded vital signs shared with physicians during appointments.
Nursing is important to me since it gives me a sense of purpose, i.e., giving back to the community. Ideally, having a sense of purpose drives me to make a meaningful contribution to performing nursing duties and making a difference in patients’ health outcomes. Nurses are responsible for providing holistic care to all patients and promoting wellness and good health practices among patients through nurse-patient education, involvement if community awareness drives, and advocating for availability and access to healthcare services for all people.
I believe that overarching nurses’ strengths include kindness, integrity, empathy, competency, and interpersonal communication. Although a nurse might not embody all the strengths, an ideal nurse should at least embrace competency, interpersonal communication, and empathy. In the nursing environment, we deal with patients presenting varied clinical symptoms and health conditions, requiring nurses to obtain the highest level of competencies to evaluate the presenting symptoms, make a definitive diagnosis, and have an appropriate treatment plan.
Nursing processes are complex and dynamic for different patients and clinical situations. Therefore, nurses are required to maintain competency, safeguard professional standards and patient care quality, and remain answerable to the recipients of their practice. My strengths include empath and interpersonal communication, which allows me to share patients’ feelings and interact with them to understand their concerns and response to treatment.
As a nurse, personal values are equally critical to providing comprehensive care. Critical values that a nurse should embody include service to people, accountability, equality, teamwork, and quality services. My nursing values include equality, accountability, and teamwork. Nursing involves attending to patients from different cultural, ethical, religious, or political affiliations. Despite our differences, nurses must treat people individually without making general assumptions based on prejudice, respect their opinions and choices, and uphold their dignity and rights. Equality, accountability, and teamwork are crucial to interacting with patients from various backgrounds and belief systems, being responsible for our actions, and sharing concerns and knowledge with other health care professionals.
View on Health
I view health as a state in which individuals experience overall well-being mentally, physically, and socially. In this regard, health requires individuals to maintain their bodies and adopt every preventive and precautionary measure to stay healthy and avoid developing any illnesses, including other physical and mental health changes. This conception is shared by Svalastog et al. (2017), who presents this view of health as a holistic concept expressed as wholeness, i.e., the ability of the body to function correctly in all spheres, socially, spiritually, psychologically, and physically. This wholeness allows individuals to express all their unique potentials in every environment they are in.
Growth in Critical thinking
Growth in critical thinking is central to developing competency in nursing. I believe that critical thinking allows nurses to exercise inductive and deductive reasoning (Reji & Saini, 2022), which are crucial in conducting clinical assessments and making definitive treatment plans. As such, I purpose to develop my critical thinking skills through my studies and placements to contribute to nursing processes effectively.
Future Role as a Nurse
I look forward to obtaining my bachelor’s degree and contributing to improving the lives of people in the community of my placement and beyond. Equally, I look forward to promoting healthy lifestyles through patient health education and establishing effective treatment environments for my patients. I also hope to develop my competency through exposure and experience to care for my patients fully, take up new challenges and manage complex clinical cases. In the long run, I look forward to pursuing master’s and doctorate degrees to allow me to contribute to nursing research and occupy leadership positions.
