When I think of civility, several words come to mind: courtesy, respect, compliance, affability, dignity, responsibility, kindness, attention, creativity, tact, and many more. All these words have a significant meaning and are abundant in many people’s lives. Sadly, observing today’s world, it is evident that many of us have forgotten about civility, not only in their personal lives but even in the workplace, which is unfortunate since research established that workplace civility increases productivity and employees’ satisfaction and retention (Beck, 2018). In this discussion, I will present the results of my organization’s work environment assessment based on my current working conditions, provide examples of incivility, and how they were addressed.

Work Environment Assessment

           To promote a healthy work environment, the organization should promote a culture of respectful communication, fairness, openness, kindness, tact, and attention (Clark, 2015). However, not all businesses care about persevering those fundamental values. Studies have shown that incivility in the workplace is common and frequently ignored (Clark, Olender, Cardoni & Kenski, 2011).

Unfortunately, based on my experience and observation, this statement happens to be true. Currently, I only work part-time as a registry nurse, so when I took Clark’s Healthy Workplace Inventory Assessment, I concentrated on my past organization, where I worked as full-time staff. The assessment revealed that, in fact, I used to work in a very unhealthy place.

My Workplace Was an Uncivil Place

Although the hospital for which I worked had a set of rules, morals, vision, and mission, it rarely abided by their orated values. They did not concentrate on retaining the best and the brightest, they were not providing any emphasis on employee wellness and self-care. They also did not treat employees fairly and courteously, as well as the workload was often unfairly distributed among nurses based on who was the charge nurse’s favorite. There were many more “do’s and don’ts,” but if I wanted to mention all of them, it would be quite a list. Some of the pertinent examples I would like to explore further are uneven distribution of workload and lack of managerial/organizational support in employees’ wellness.

Uneven Distribution of Workload 

I noticed that many hospitals do not value seasonal nurses. For many years I have been a nurse traveler or registry, as well as once I took a permanent position. As a seasonal nurse, I was given the most hectic assignments and often not offered any guidance or help. My breaks were offered as last with other travelers or registry, and most of the time, I did not get all of them as set by California law. When I inquired about over time based on those incidents, it was frowned upon, and often not approved. To keep my income, I knew I had to be quiet and not bring attention to my issues. I was not allowed to speak up, because once I did, my contract was immediately canceled.

However, the incivility of organizations for which I worked as a traveler did not differ much from experience of a permanent position. Since I love medicine and nursing, and I consider it my passion, not a job, my charge nurses were overloading me with high ICU acuity patients stating that ‘Annette is capable of handling this.’ In contrast, other nurses were given ‘easy’ assignments and often spending most of their shift cruising the news on their cellphones or chatting in the nursing station’s corners. Receiving any help was nearly impossible to achieve.

Lack of managerial/organizational support in employees’ wellness.

Another example of organizational incivility is based on a case from my last permanent workplace where I cared for a patient who suffered brain death during hospitalization. I cannot describe the story in full since HIPPA protects it, but the result was that my dear colleague and myself needed wellness care because we both suffered PTSD. Our manager told us we should reach out to our health department, but when we did, several times, no one ever returned our calls. When we tried asking our manager for help in arranging a consultation, we received no answer. My colleague ended up getting psychological help from her private insurance and took three weeks of a medical leave of absence, but I decided to power through. Sometimes I cried unexpectedly, even at work, when I thought of that unfortunate tragic case, which by the way, was not a nursing mistake, but the knowledge of what went wrong and how the death of that patient could have been prevented was emotionally damaging. In the end, no one spoke to us about that, no one reached out. Management did not help arrange for wellness consultation, and we were entirely on our own.

I will never forget that case, but specifically, I will never forget how coldly and inattentively my organization treated us. At that moment, I realized that this was not a place I wanted to continue to work for, and I started weighing my options and looking for another job. I eventually left, so did my colleague.

Conclusion

Civility is a set of morals, values, and traits that one must possess to succeed in personal and professional life. Civility is kindness, mindful communication, listening, and consciousness. It is respect, responsibility, and ethics. Civilized leaders are invaluable examples to others and a stellar foundation of any organization.

Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

Late Policy
