Journal : Raising a Teen

This article covers a journal about Raising a Teen.

Instructions

In this course, you are asked to complete three journal assignments in which you reflect on “raising” a teen from birth through age 18 years. Earlier in the course, you reflected on your readings and personal experiences to consider the unique challenges of raising a child from birth to 10 years. In this module, you will again reflect on your readings and personal experiences to consider the unique challenges of raising a child from 10 to 14 years (this is the “tween” and early adolescent developmental period).

Raising your child from ages 10 to 14 years is marked by the challenges of adolescence and puberty. What does this period start? Everybody\’s different—from early bloomers to slow-but-steady growers. In other words, there\’s a wide range of what\’s considered normal development. That said, this period is marked by more than the development of adult sexual characteristics, such as breasts and menstrual periods in females and growing facial hair and deepening of the voice in males. There are also dramatic changes in behavior. Kids desire greater independence; they are increasingly aware of how others, especially their peers, see them and “fitting in” is a critical aspect of their psychological development (KidsHealth, 2020). According to KidsHealth (2020), “Kids may start ‘trying on’ different looks and identities, and they become very aware of how they differ from their peers, which can result in episodes of distress and conflict with parents” and peers alike. Their peers often become more important than parents as far as making decisions.

Parents raising children at these ages are often given advice, such as talk to your kids early and often, put yourself in their shoes (be empathetic), pick your battles, set expectations, respect your kids’ privacy while also monitoring their behavior, and look for “warning signs” regarding your child’s mental health. For this journal entry, consider—from your readings and from your own experiences—the challenges of raising a child from ages 10 to 14 years. Specifically, answer the following questions:

  1. Put yourself in in the role of the parent. What strategies do you feel would be successful to raise your own child from ages 10 to 14 years?
  2. How does your parenting perspective relate to your own experiences and the course material?
  3. What specific relevant connections can you make?

Journal 1: Raising a Teen

Logically, the adolescent years are a time of change and tension for many families. The change is a result of rapid growth, both physically and psychologically, and cognitively. Despite what some people believe about teenagers, they are frequently lively, intellectual, and ambitious, with a strong desire to be morally correct. While the teen years can be a time of tension between parents and children, it is a crucial period that can be utilized to assist adolescents in developing their unique personalities.

One of the strategies that I feel would successfully raise my child from ages 10 to 14 is educating myself. No one can ever go wrong with extra knowledge in a particular area (KidsHealth, 2020). I would educate myself on the cycles and motions that teenage kids go through, how they think, and the changes that occur as they transition. Also, educating myself on the different ways to handle my child, discipline, communicate, engage, motivate, and encourage (KidsHealth, 2020). I think that educating oneself helps identify how to deal with different situations when it comes to teenagers. The last step would be to implement all the lessons learned and stick to the effective ways of dealing with a teenager.

The other strategy that I would use is balancing freedom with guidance. Micromanaging a teen’s actions perpetuates the notion that they can’t be trusted to make appropriate judgments on their own. It’s critical to strike the correct balance between freedom and direction (Landau, 2020). It is also vital to provide teens with plenty of chances to develop the skills they’ve learned. Caregivers should allow kids to learn from their errors by allowing them to experience consequences. They’ll gain confidence in their capacity to make healthy decisions over time.

My parenting perspective relates to my own experience because I was given freedom growing up. I was allowed to live, explore, interact, and learn so many things on my own. My parents would guide me once in a while, and that gave me a sense of independence. I got to learn so much from my mistakes (Landau, 2020). I would connect with other parents raising young teenagers and professionals who deal with all aspects of a teenager’s life.
