Sample Answer – Using collaboration to assist patient compliance

Patient compliance is essential to facilitate the effectiveness of the intervention prescribed by the clinicians.  Noncompliance undermines attainment of the desired treatment goals, resulting to poor patient outcomes   and increase in the healthcare cost. Some of the main factors that contribute to patient noncompliance to the treatment regimen include lack of understanding as a result of ineffective communication; poor patient –care provider interaction; health beliefs and attitudes; the adverse effects of the ailments on the patients’ decision making and social factors, such as social isolation, prejudice and discrimination (Celio, Ninane, Olivier,  & Schneider, 2018).

Collaboration between various stakeholders has been identified as one of the major approaches that could be applied to enhance patient compliance to the intervention (Celio, Ninane, Olivier,  & Schneider, 2018). In hospital setting, collaboration could be between the nurse and other healthcare professionals, including physicians, psychiatrists and psychologists among others. Additionally, collaboration could involve other persons, such religious leaders and members of the patient’s family.  In the case of Alma collaboration with both medical and non-medical personnel is essential to facilitate compliance. The nurse practitioner could collaborate with psychologists to help in identifying the various factors that could be preventing the patient from complying with the treatment and then developing appropriate strategy to address the issue.

Collaboration with other people could also help in deciphering the reason why the patient takes offense at her name being mispronounced by the care provider. The collaboration particularly with an individual close to Alma such as a family member would help the care provider   with knowledge about the patient’s background, including the cultural background, which could be undermining formation of therapeutic relationship with the nurse. Additionally, collaboration with other professionals could help in identifying the care providers’ biases and beliefs, which could be undermining communication and formation of good working relationship with the client.
