Overview and Heritage

I live in the suburban of Cape Coral, Florida. I have an Irish and Caucasian that can be traced back to four generations. Having been born here, I have seen the community grow and develop into the city it is today. The region is moderately to densely populated, with some areas especially in the rural areas being sparsely populated. I have also had the opportunity to live in North Carolina, Texas, and Ohio during my years. I lived in rural Texas which was sparsely populated and less diverse compared to the North Carolina and Ohio. I am married with a two children.

I work as a Labor and Delivery Nurse, Recovery, Postpartum, and Level 2 NICU at Lee Health. My expertise includes Nursing, Neonatal Intensive Care, Hospitals, Business Process Improvement, and Healthcare Management. My work allows me to take care of my family and afford the essentials of life including a health insurance. I have a Bachelor’s degree focused in Registered Nursing/Registered Nurse from Florida Gulf Coast University. My education background has allowed me to work with Lee Heath for over 15 years and amass experience in Child health, neonatal care and delivery. However, the occupational risks include potential exposure to infectious diseases, toxic substances, back injuries, and radiation. Also, we are subject to hazards such as stress, shift work, and violence in the workplace.

Communication

I openly communicate and share my thoughts and feelings with family, friends and health care providers when necessary. I also consider myself a good listener as I tend to be keen on the things that affect different individuals. On touching, I don’t mind being touched as long as it not inappropriate or offensive. For instance, I would prefer a handshake as a primary mode for greetings for patients and colleagues alike. Besides, in interactions with patients, I always ask or notify the patient before I touch them and where I touch them, try and maintain an eye contact to ensure I communicate effectively and appropriately. I seek consent because of the diverse beliefs and cultures of patients, and the different ways they approach things.

Family roles and organizations

Within the family set-up we major decisions together. However, I do ensure that my perspectives are taken into consideration in such cases. Due to my work as a nurse, I make decisions on medical, domestic, as well as on the children, and contribute to financial decision making. My husband helps with the financial decisions as well as long-term plans for the family. I believe in inclusive decision making where we coordinate as a family to make decisions rather than rely on culturally defined gender roles in decision making. However, I do perform roles such as cooking, nurturing, and providing while my husband helps with providing, also nurturing and ensuring discipline.

We have ensure that our children understand that they need to be obedient, respectful, and mindful and do their best in school and other activities. We discourage the use of drugs, being disrespectful and non-obedient and work towards nurturing good characters. As they grow into young adulthood, we have emphasized on maintaining trust, respect, and integrity in all they do. Besides, as a family, we have prioritized the provision of basic amenities as well as a healthy and nurturing environment that supports the growth and development of our children in the different aspects of their lives.

I think a good reputation is what gives our family a status in the community. On different cultural actions such as children out of wedlock, I tend to believe it narrows down to the individuals but as for my family I think it shows disrespect to the existing family set up. Further, as an individual, and a nurse, I accept all gender and sexual orientations and believe in the liberty of choice with a relationship or a marriage set up. I concur with popular culture that accepts all individuals. I believe that it is essential to have a society that is inclusive to all regardless of their race, ethnic background, religious affiliation, sexual orientation and gender.

Workforce issues

I have worked with Lee Health for over 15 years. I always manage to at work 10-30 minutes early and ensure that report to meetings on time. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work with colleagues with diverse backgrounds and this has helped me improve my cultural sensitivity. I consider myself passionate to my work as a nurse and helping mother give birth as I understand the challenges they face. I believe in the mentorship aspect of leadership and I tend to lead by example especially in teams. My time in the facility has helped me build good relationships with physicians and other nurses as well as the community. Biocultural Ecology

I am not allergic to any medications, but may have issues with over the counter medications such headaches, or a cold. There is a family history of diabetes and high blood pressure on my mother’s side. However, there is no history of disabilities within the family. I identify as a Caucasian with Irish roots. However, we have a diverse family which has individuals from both Hispanic and African American ethnic affiliations.

High Risk health behavior

I do not smoke cigarettes, pipe or chew tobacco. I also do not drink or use recreation drugs. Besides, I try my best to exercise from time to time by doing 1 hour of cardio and other muscle endurance exercises 3 days in a week. I have also taken dieting and am keen on limiting the amount of food I consume. My background as a nurse makes me protective as I always use seatbelts, or helmets. Within the house I ensure high levels of hygiene through practices and awareness on the potential risks. I promote healthy eating within the family and healthy practices such as jogging and engaging in sporting activities in school.

Nutrition

I am trying to manage my weight at the moment through healthy eating. My diet currently has a lot of vegetables and meat and minimal fats and high carbs. I avoid any fast foods and am keen on ensuring I bring my lunch to work. I prefer chicken soup or orange juice when am not feeling well. However, I avoid meat and eggs when am ill because they sours my stomach. However, for illness such as a cold, I’d eat chicken soup and mango juice. On normal days, I ensure that vegetables are in my and tend to ensure that the quantity is also limited and instead of snacks I have fruits such as bananas and apples. Hence, I have to have a vegetable meal, a fruit and drink lots of water daily and a schedule of two meals per day. Occasionally, I add fish or shrimp and beans to the diet.  Seafood happens to be part of the Florida culture with the grouper being one of my family’s favorite meal.

Pregnancy And Childbearing Practice

I have two children. I regularly use birth control and pregnancy has been a happy time for the family. Even though it was a bit stressful, my husband was supportive and the extended family was also very supportive. I have no specific meals for my pregnancy diet but I do avoid tuna and limit my sugar intake. My mother and spouse were present during both deliveries which were both traditional as I lay down in the lithotomy. My sister helped me after the delivery as well as my husband. My expertise in labor and delivery proved useful in both instances. For instance, to care for the baby’s umbilical cord, I ensured that the umbilical cord stump was clean and dry and give the baby sponge baths. After time it fell off naturally without any treatment per the evidence based practice.

Death Ritual

I don’t have any specific activity that I need performed to prepare for death. I am also unsure of having the knowledge of an impending death. Instead, I would prefer a normal funeral within 7 days with no rituals. With the dominant culture, men tend to be stronger and show minimal emotions when grieving. On the other hand, women are emotional, vulnerable and need more attention when faced with death. Children also tend to be emotional and may require time and support to heal. Including children in the death rituals might help them go through the grieving processes.

Spirituality

I am a Christian, even though am not deeply religious. I pray at night or early in the morning when I wake up seeking for protection and favor for my family and me. I also meditate from time to time as it helps me relax especially after a long day at work. Essentially, I draw strength and meaning of life from family and sometimes guidance from the extended family. Besides prayer and meditation, I also engage in professional massages and chiropters, and also yoga to help me improve my physical and emotional health.

Health Care Practice

I engage in physical exercise and diet to maintain my health. Within the family, I am responsible for the family’s health since I am the nurse. Most for the over the counter medicine I use is Tylenol cold medicine and vitamins mostly for the kids. I have done green tea occasionally but do not do any folk medicines. However, I ensure that I show my patients who take folk medicine the importance of adding normal medication and adhering to it. I also agree with cultural standpoints that support organ transplants and can be an organ donor if need be.

People with physical disabilities treated with respect and attention within our culture. The inclusive systems also minimize instances of systematic bias and through social services, they receive care and assistance.  Besides, for those in rehabilitation, they receive community support and get a second chance at life and relationships with people.

Health Care Practices

Health care services are readily available to my family and me in our community. Transportation and accessibility is also high making health services available to a wide population. The additional health practices I use include massage, physical therapy and occupational therapy. For most people in the community, these are the most common practices besides physical activity.

Health care providers

When am ill, I see Physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners within Lee Health. I prefer same sex health care providers as I am more comfortable to share my experience with a woman. I don’t use any other healers other than licensed health providers.

I do not adhere to the dominant cultural practice and beliefs of the Caucasian ethnic group. This is based on the belief I have in inclusion and the possibility of having biases towards people with a different background by following dominant cultural practices. As a nurse working with diverse colleagues and patients, I have taken my time to learn and acknowledge, and respect other ethnic backgrounds. As a result, I consistently examine my actions, words and interactions with others to ensure that I can understand the cultural difference and develop an awareness on different cultures. This has helped me understand the various perspectives of other cultures, and ethnicities and learned to respect them.
