Summary Findings of Review of a Nurse’s Social Media Profile

Introduction

Nurses can utilize the tools to improve professional education and networking, patient care and education, organizational promotion, and programs in public health. Hao & Gao (2017) note that despite their benefits, social media pose potential risks to both nurses and patients through damage of professional reputation, violation of professional – personal boundaries, licensing and breach of patient privacy, and the distribution of imperfect quality information. There is a need for nursing professionals to constantly review their social media profiles and activities and ensure these risks are not within their sites. Consequently, this essay reviews my social media profile, pictures, and posts to identify items that would be detrimental and unprofessional to the nurse’s career and generate legal problems for the nurse and the nursing field in general.

Social Media Posts or Conversations

Upon reviewing my social media profile, I identified social networking posts and conversations that I took part in to be appropriate. As a leader, I minimize my social media engagements to daily scriptures and devotional themes that reflect my values and encourage the younger nurses who look up to me. A nurse leader of the 2020s and beyond should be armed with current healthcare information technology tools to supplement their operational expertise, knowledge, skills, and strategy that entirely uses social media. As a responsible nurse leader, using social media has allowed me to leave messages for private and public engagements, upload videos, and post photos. Goldstein & Pewen( 2013) reiterate the need to respect and abide by HIPPA. This awareness has made me not post any pictures of my patients or contravened any HIPPA regulations.

Nurses Have a Responsibility to Uphold a Standard of Conduct

Nurses are duty-bound to uphold a standard of conduct that rhymes with standards governing the nursing profession in their personal and professional capacity because these values become the individual’s goals and beliefs that become the basis of their decision making when offering patient care (Poorchagizi et al., 2019). At all times, the nurse should be guided by nursing core values like altruism, autonomy, human dignity, social justice, honesty, and integrity. Any behavior to the contrary could be interpreted to be negative to the extent that it violates patients’ privacy, the use of discriminatory or profane language, and images that inflame sexual desire or adverse comments concerning their patients, employer, or institution of learning. A good example is when a nurse either deliberately or unintentionally posted a document containing protected patient information. From their days in training, nurses are reminded that patient confidentiality and privacy is an ethical and legal duty that they must abide by at all times like any other HCPs.

Areas of my social media activity that reflect Christian values as they relate to respecting human value and dignity for all individuals

Activities within my social media sites like Facebook and Instagram advance the Christian values of respecting human values and dignity. I used the social media platform to reinforce my beliefs on a Supreme Being using the Christian perspective as faith significantly provides answers that the marvels of science cannot definitively resolve even with advanced technology (Guraya, 2016).  I believe my posting of pictures of nurses helps to motivate those in the profession to give their best in offering patient-based care for better job satisfaction and winning awards.

Conclusion

Retaining one’s objectivity and ensuring positive and accountable use of social media has a significant impact on the health and well-being of nurses at the individual level and in the workplace. If one is engaged in research settings, social media provides an efficient method to share one’s findings. The nurse student should also be aware and avoid negative use of social media like breaches in confidentiality, cyberbullying and harassment, and going beyond professional boundaries.
