Sample letter of recommendation work.

Strong letters of recommendation require a person to have a sizeable depth and length of association with the applicant. They’ll also need to provide specific examples in terms of positive observations about the applicant’s strengths in the work environment. These will help create an atmosphere where describing how one feels about recommending another will reveal clearly what has gone into their decision-making process. It’s also beneficial for well-rounded people to keep in mind that when approaching this type of task, they should make sure to use language that flatters (nicely) rather than praising (harshly). The difference in wording can make it clear in one case whether or not you’re simply stating your opinion, whereas in the other the tone will reflect something more personal in attitude. At the end of the day, however, good recommendations are still good recommendations even if it feels like you’re just stating an opinion.

To Whom It May Concern:

I am delighted to write this letter in recommendation of Jane Smith, who is applying to the postgraduate program at your institution. Due to her strong work ethic and professionalism, I feel confident in recommending her to your school.

I have known Ms. Smith for two and a half years. She worked as a Patent Filing Specialist at the International Patent Law Office, where I was her direct supervisor. I assigned cases to Ms. Smith and monitored her progress. She was very efficient and completed tasks on time with professionalism. She was active in asking questions and seeking solutions to problems, and if she encountered problems or made an error, she had the courage to admit the mistake, take responsibility, and immediately seek to rectify the situation. Throughout her time in this position, Ms. Smith consistently strove for excellence.

I was particularly impressed by her strong communication skills. Part of her job involved contacting high-profile companies, mostly in Japan, and addressing their needs, and meeting their demands. She showed very strong organizational and management abilities, and she was very orderly, with the ability to learn quickly. If anything, Ms. Smith was at times too eager to complete tasks successfully and quickly, which ultimately serves as proof of her dedicated ambition to succeed and excel.

Based on my firsthand observation of her performance over the past few years, I believe that Ms. Jane Smith is fully capable of pursuing a master’s degree in your university and performing excellently. She has a cheerful and positive personality that makes her a joy to work with. At the same time, she displays leadership ability and an innovative mindset, and she exceeded expectations in her role at the International Patent Law Office; I expect that she will do the same in her postgraduate studies. I therefore enthusiastically recommend her to your master’s program without reservation.

Sincerely,

Dave Johnson
