Growth as a professional is a critical component of being a successful healthcare provider. For providers to improve their skills, we must first know where improvement is needed. Self-awareness should not be perceived negatively but rather as a chance to improve skills that we as providers have lost or have limited experience with. Self-reflection allows us to understand where improvement is necessary, and seeking peer input is always beneficial. Our colleagues can not only serve as an excellent resource for knowledge but also for how we can progress. Our training as physician assistants prepared us for the most likely scenarios we would face in real-life clinic settings; however, continued growth is necessary to ensure we provide the most up-to-date care and contribute positively to our organizations.
Growth as a provider is not simply related to continuing medical education. As providers, we must educate ourselves on the healthcare system as a whole. We play a very integral role, but we also must understand the external factors that contribute to the care we provide to our patients. As such, I have decided to complete this doctoral program to better understand my role within my system beyond simply clinician. Continuing education only focuses on medical knowledge, whereas professional development ensures are success within our systems.
Presently, I attempt to attend all grand rounds that are available at my facility. I also strive to keep my clinical skills current. I actively attempt blood draws IV insertions, and roles outside mine as a clinician to ensure that I am current with my hands-on skills. Additionally, I regularly attend meetings that address how our system functions to understand what steps are necessary to improve my success within my organization.
Barriers that I often face are time constraints, lack of availability, and limited resources to improve my skills. Time is limited as a busy clinician, and this often makes it difficult to allot for all meetings which I desire to attend. However, as a small rural, health clinic availability is often limited. We are part of a larger organization, and the grand rounds at our main facility are more readily available. Thankfully, the option for virtual meetings is now available, making attendance much easier. Given that I provide family medicine, I often feel at times that I am stuck in the clinic and do not have a chance to hone my hands-on skills.
