Urinary tract infections (UTI) are one of the top five most frequently recorded infections in hospitals. Urinary catheters contribute to about 75% of UTIs acquired in hospitals (National Healthcare Safety Network [NHSN], 2020). Furthermore, up to 25% of hospitalized patients use urinary catheters while in the hospital. This essay highlights the effects of CAUTIs and a recommendation on preventing CAUTIs in female acute care wards.

Compliance with CAUTI prevention best practices

This quality improvement initiative aims to prevent CAUTIs by using comprehensive compliance with the NHSN’s CAUTI best practices. CAUTI complications result in patient discomfort, a longer hospital stay, increased mortality, and unnecessary healthcare costs (Zavodnick et al., 2020).

The target population for this quality improvement initiative is female inpatients. Women are more prone to bladder infections, which in the most common type of UTIs.
