Prevention of Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections By Enforcing Compliance to the CAUTI Prevention Best Practices

Urinary tract infections (UTI) are one of the top five most frequently recorded infections in hospitals. Urinary catheters contribute to about 75% of UTIs acquired in hospitals (National Healthcare Safety Network [NHSN], 2020). Furthermore, up to 25% of hospitalized patients use urinary catheters while in the hospital. This essay highlights the effects of CAUTIs and a recommendation on preventing CAUTIs in female acute care wards.

Compliance with CAUTI prevention best practices

This quality improvement initiative aims to prevent CAUTIs by using comprehensive compliance with the NHSN’s CAUTI best practices. CAUTI complications result in patient discomfort, a longer hospital stay, increased mortality, and unnecessary healthcare costs (Zavodnick et al., 2020).

The target population for this quality improvement initiative is female inpatients. Women are more prone to bladder infections, which in the most common type of UTIs. Women have a shorter urethra; thus, bacteria travels a shorter distance to infect the bladder (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases [NIDDK], 2017). Besides, the urethra is closer to the rectum that hosts bacteria that cause bladder infections.

This initiative will adopt a collaborative model and strategies to facilitate compliance with the recommended CAUTIs best practices.  Collaboration is associated with reduced hospital-acquired infections (Lo et al., 2014). This intervention will involve a collaborative approach among physicians, health care workers, patients, and their families. This intervention’s benefits will include reducing CAUTIs, associated mortality, and effective cost control of avoidable expenses (Lo et al., 2014). These benefits justify the quality improvement initiative. The success of the CAUTI quality improvement initiative will be evaluated based on the rates of CAUTIs, compliance to catheter care, decreased days of catheter use, CAUTI-associated mortality, and healthcare costs associated with CAUTIs. Besides, a feedback mechanism will be instituted to enable relevant stakeholders, particularly physicians, nurses, and patients, to provide feedback on compliance, efficacy, and awareness.
