Describe the difference between leadership and management?

The difference between leadership and management is often overlooked. Leadership involves getting people to understand and believe in the company’s vision, goals, and objectives. Leadership is generally about leading people to achieve specific goals. Management entails administration and ensuring that a company’s daily activities happen as planned (Toor & Ofori, 2008). Management is concerned with the responsibility of things like equipment, money, tasks, and advertisement. Leaders set the direction and guide their followers towards success. Managers control and direct people and resources according to set values and principles.

Are all managers leaders? What leadership characteristics have you observed during changes that your organization has gone through? Did it contribute to an effective change? Why or why not?

By practice, all nurses are leaders. Leadership is embedded within the nursing profession and its role in practice. However, nurse leadership is often associated with the executive position and is less associated with bedside nursing roles. The public does not view all nurses as leaders, but all nurses are leaders in design. They play a pivotal role in the assessment and implementation of reforms in the healthcare system. Attributes like integrity, courage, effective communication, initiative, consideration, and ability to address stress make a nurse a leader (Anonson, Walker, Arries, Maposa, Telford, & Berry, 2014). Leaders are also changing managers, dedicated to excellence, service-oriented, and opportunity creators. Excellent leaders can also manage and resolve workplace conflicts. A nurse leader is one that can mobilize and motivate employees to get work done. Leaders are also concerned about employees’ physical and psychological well-being.

My responses are in-line with the perception of power according to servant leadership. Servant leaders serve their employees rather than the other way round (Waterman, 2011). They put the needs of their followers first and work to improve outcomes and make employees better. These leaders do not take pride in an organization’s accomplishment but praise employees and give credit for a job well done. Servant leaders are emotionally intelligent and self-aware. They are considerate of their followers’ emotional state. Servant leaders are aware of the impact of their actions and feelings on others. They prioritize other people’s needs and focus on the thriving of their followers.
