Consequences of Not Involving Nurses in SDLC Assignment

Post a description of what you believe to be the consequences of a healthcare organization not involving nurses in each stage of the SDLC when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system. Provide specific examples of potential issues at each stage of the SDLC and explain how the inclusion of nurses may help address these issues. Then, explain whether you had any input in the selection and planning of new health information technology systems in your nursing practice or healthcare organization and explain potential impacts of being included or not in the decision-making process. Be specific and provide examples.

The Inclusion of Nurses in the SDLC

week 9 discussion The Inclusion of Nurses in the Systems Development Life Cycle In the media introduction to this module, it was suggested that you as a nurse have an important role in the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC). With a focus on patient care and outcomes, nurses may not always see themselves as contributors to the development of new systems. However, as you may have observed in your own experience, exclusion of nurse contributions when implementing systems can have dire consequences. In this Discussion, you will consider the role you might play in systems development and the ramifications of not being an active participant in systems development. To Prepare: Review the steps of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) as presented in the Resources. Reflect on your own healthcare organization and consider any steps your healthcare organization goes through when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system. The Inclusion of Nurses in the SDLC  Consider what a nurse might contribute to decisions made at each stage of the SDLC when planning for new health information technology. Systems development life cycle (SDLC) is a procedure that is utilized in developing computer systems that an establishment uses to produce useful information services that aid its development. The process entails seven phases, namely planning, system analysis & requirements, system design, development, integration & testing, implementation, and operations & maintenance (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015).

In healthcare, SDLC is used to describe what a healthcare organization needs to integrate a new system. Nurses ought to take part in the SDLC because they are an integral component of healthcare delivery. This is due to the reason that they are aware of the daily demands of healthcare and what to apply to or eliminate from a system to make it more effective.

Nurses should be active in the multiple stages in the breakdown of the SDLC process because they aid build a program that should be the most user-friendly in its implementation. This helps ensure nurses are comfortable with the programs in advance. Furthermore, they assist in creating a system that can be the most useful in providing a simple means of sharing information from one department to another in the healthcare organization (Benton & Shaffer, 2016). Moreover, nurses should participate in the implementation process and ensure it serves to provide clients with reliable healthcare services (Chung, Connor, Short & Hurtado, 2016). The Inclusion of Nurses in the SDLC

Conclusively, the senior managers of healthcare organizations should guarantee that nurses are involved in the SDLC to ensure the integrity of the generated systems. The involvement also implies that adjustments to protect the formation process are not delayed. Although I have not engaged in the process as a nurse at the moment, I believe that the organization at which I operate can understand of the significance of involving nurses in SDLC because it results in the system becoming beneficial in the long term.

Nurses must be involved in the earlier stages of software development cycle in order to have an efficient system which literally translates the language of health into the software being used. Implementation and adoption of such systems require identification of champions or problem solvers.
Implementing information systems can provide better access to evidence; it can affect the patient care quality and support evidence-based nursing. Software tools to facilitate research are available in all medical fields (Kardan & Darvish, 2008).
Nurse Informaticists don’t just work behind the scenes. They help change how patients receive healthcare. Advancements in healthcare data and communication, paired with remote health devices, allow healthcare professionals to shift care from the hospital to the patient’s home with remote patient care.
