Kyle Quincy
Kyle Quincy, 20, is a student at Beck University in Riverbend City. He reports he has been abusing methamphetamine. Kyle reports that he is gay, but he has revealed this to very few people.
Hello, Kyle. Thank you for coming in. Iām going to be asking you some questions. For starters, how old are you?
I just turned 20. Iām a sophomore at Beck University.
Are you a full time student?
Yeah.
Whatās your current living situation?
I live in a campus apartment with three other guys.
What are you studying in school?
Finance. I just got accepted into the business school. Iām good at math and stuff and I always wanted to be a stockbroker. But now that Iām taking the classes, theyāre really boring. I donāt know. Iām just not interested in it the way I used to be.
Do you also have a job?
Not now. I was working at the Chicken Hut, butā¦ well, Iām just not anymore. It was a really lousy job. Iām looking for a better job now. Like an internship or something that has to do with my major, I guess. But I donāt know. Like I said, that stuff isnāt interesting to me like it used to be.
Okay. Kyle, do you have any medical problems?
No.
Have you ever been hospitalized?
Just once when I was seven and I broke my leg. I fell off the jungle gym.
Do you take any prescriptions?
No.
So, you said that youāre not working right now. What other jobs have you had in the past?
Iāve worked at a bunch of fast food places. But never more than a couple of months.
Why have you left these jobs?
Because they suck. Andā¦well, I donāt always get along with the managers real well. Theyāre not flexible when it comes to hours, and Iām a full time student, so thatās a problem. To be honest, itās partly my fault. Itās hard for me to get up early and get to work on time. Plus I donāt have a car or even my license, so I have to rely on public transportation, and that doesnāt always run when I need it.
Do you parents support you?
Yeah, my mom and dad pay for college and books and stuff, but they expect me to earn spending money. Which sucks, honestly.
Why is that?
I just hate being dependent on them. I canāt wait until I can support myself so I wouldnāt have to hideā¦ well, that Iām gay. If they knew, Iām pretty sure they would stop paying for college. And it would pretty much kill my mom. Sheās very closed-minded.
Thank you for sharing your personal information with me, Kyle. Other than to your mother, do you find it difficult to disclose that you are gay?
Iāve always felt kind of different and weird. I mean, thereās not a lot of black kids at my school, and I donāt really fit in with the ones who are here. It was like that in high school too. I was bullied a lot. So I kind of just keep to myself. I donāt want to stand out more than I already do by being gay.
Kyle, have you ever been in a relationship?
Not really. I meanā¦well, thereās this guy in one of my classes, and I think he might like me. But I havenāt done anything about that. I went out with girls in high school because thatās what my mom expected me to do.
Kyle, Iām going to ask you some questions about alcohol and drug use. Is that okay?
I guess.
Have you used drugs or alcohol in the past 30 days?
Um, not much alcohol. I drink with my roommates sometimes, but not more than a couple of beers at a time. Butā¦are you sure I can tell you about this?
Kyle, what is said in our sessions is completely confidential, unless you threaten to harm yourself or others or disclose any child or elder abuse.
Okay, well. Iāve been experimenting a little bit. With meth. Since my second semester freshman year. I used to get it at this bar that I went to with a friend. But now I know a guy I can get it from.
Thank you for telling me this, Kyle. How often do you use meth?
I donāt know. More than I used to. I used to just do it once in a while, like maybe once a week or so? Now I do it like three or four times a week. I used to smoke it, but now I inject. The high is a lot better.
In the past 30 days, has your meth use caused any problems in your life?
Thatās a good question. I mean, I guess thatās why I lost my jobābecause I didnāt feel like getting up in the morning. And Iāve missed some classes too. I used to have really good attendance. In the past 30 days, Iāve probably missed class 5 or 6 times. Andā¦well, this is hard to talk about, But Iāve had unprotected sex a couple of times with guys Iāve met when I was high. I know, thatās a really stupid thing to do. But itās hard to control myself when Iām high.
Would you like to stop using meth?
To be honest, I donāt even know. I know that I should. Itās pretty much the only thing that makes me feel good anymore. I guess Iād be willing to try to give it up because I donāt want to mess up my whole life. But Iām scared of quitting cold turkey.
Have you ever tried to stop?
No, not really. I mean, I was home for the summer and didnāt do it then. But I wasnāt using as much as I am now, so it didnāt affect me much. I donāt know what Iām going to do if I go home for the summer and donāt have access to it. Iām thinking about staying on campus all summer so I donāt have to go home.
Have you ever used other drugs, or prescription pills?
Never. I mean, I smoked pot a few times. But thatās it. Just meth.
Thank you so much for answering these questions, Kyle. I have a few other questions I need to ask you. Have you ever been arrested for committing a crime?
Never. Iāve always been kind of a goody two-shoes, until now.
You said you donāt have a driverās license. Is there a reason for that?
I donāt know. My parents only have one car, and I never got to practice much. I guess I ought to get my act together and start driving, huh?
Does anyone in your family drink a lot, or use drugs?
My mom doesnāt drink at all because sheās so religious. My dad doesnāt drink much. I have two younger sisters, and as far as I know they donāt drink or use drugs at all.
How about your roommates?
Yeah, they all drink a lot. And my roommate Jack, he uses meth too. Thatās how I got so involved with using it. He showed me how to inject.
Do you consider Jack a close friend? Or your other roommates?
No. I mean, I guess Jack is kind of a friend. Heās one of the only people who knows Iām gay. I donāt have a lot of friends though. I wouldnāt say I have any close friends at all.

Kyle, have you ever been abused in any way? Physically, emotionally, sexually?
No. I mean, not really. No oneās ever hit me or anything, but I guess you could say thereās a lot of verbal and emotional abuse in my family. My dad says a lot of really angry things to me and my sistersālike, he calls us names and tells us that weāre worthless and stuff like that. We have to be really careful not to let him lose his temper, but that can be really hard. Most of the time heās just kind of randomly mad at us. Thatās one reason I donāt him to know Iām gay. Heāll blow up.
Iām sorry to hear that. Have you ever spoken to a counselor before?
No.
Have you ever felt very anxious?
Like, all the time. Except when I do meth.
Have you ever felt depressed for a significant amount of time?
Yeah. I mean, not now. But like I said, I was bullied a lot as a kid and my dad was really mean to us at home. So I was depressed a lot as a kid.
Have you ever had a hallucination?
No.
Did you ever think about hurting yourself?
Not in a long time. In high school, I thought about suicide a lot. I used to look up things on the Internet about how to do it. I never tried to do it though, and I donāt think about that anymore.
You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computerās spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper ā in silence and then aloud ā before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at āpaddingā to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS
Discussion Questions (DQ)
Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.
Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.
One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or āgood post,ā and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.
I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.
Weekly Participation
Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone elseās work).
Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.
APA Format and Writing Quality
Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

Use of Direct Quotes
I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Mastersā level and deduct points accordingly.
As Mastersā level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone elseās words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
LopesWrite Policy
For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a āfinal submitā to me.
Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone elseās thoughts more than your own?
Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.
Late Policy
The universityās policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
Communication
Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:
Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
