Research utilization began with Florence Nightingale who used data to change practices that contributed to high mortality rates. The gap between the conduct of research and research utilization increased as the profession focused on transitioning education of nurses to colleges and universities, educating nurse researchers, and publishing research reports. In the 1970s, the need for greater use of research findings was identified as one of the 15 priorities in clinical nursing research. As nursing science became available to guide practice, the concept of research utilization emerged under the leadership of groups such as the Michigan Nurses Association, Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education in Nursing, Nursing Child Assessment Satellite Training Project
