Poetry Essay

Timeline: Final Draft is due on Monday, June 22

Directions:

Choose ONE of the poems that we’ve read in class this semester and write a well-planned out coherent essay that argues a point that you want to make about the story.

Choose ONE

of the poetic tools that are discussed in the Understanding Poetry slideshow (located in the Poetry Essay folder) and discuss how the author of your chosen poem uses the tool effectively in his or her poem.

Just a reminder of what a good essay consists of, the essay should contain:

1.

A nice introductory paragraph that “leads in” to your thesis statement. Your thesis statement should not be the first sentence of the essay.

2.

A clear and precise thesis statement that will alert the reader what the essay is going to be about.

3.

A good, strong topic sentence in each paragraph, usually the first sentence of the paragraph.

4.

Enough development in each paragraph to fully support the main point (aka topic sentence).

5.

A conclusion that either summarizes the main points of the essay or emphasizes the very important points
