Are famous people of today good role models? This is a very controversial topic and a lot of people have their own opinions. There are people, who believe that the famous can be good role models as many famous people do tasks such as helping out in 3rd world countries, giving money to charities and help out with sporting and charity events. However not all famous people are like this. Some just go out and break every law in one night from drink driving to excessive use of drugs. So can famous people really be considered as good role models to the younger generations? One great example of a good famous role model would be actor Johnny Depp. Johnny Depp was born in Owensboro, Kentucky into a very unstable family of John Depp and Betty Walls. When he was only 8 years old his mother and father divorced, leaving him to have many stress related problems and as a result of this started to self-harm. This continued into his teenage years and eventually stopped when he met his first wife Lorri Anne Alison, this was also the start of his acting career and the start of him turning his life around. Depp then starred in many major films starting in 19884 with “Nightmare on Elm Street”. In 1999 Depp and his new wife Vanessa Paradis had their first child Lily-Rose Depp.
Unfortunately she developed a very serious kidney infection and as a result of this had to stay in Great Ormond Street hospital. She eventually battled off the disease and Depp could not have been happier and due to their help started to donate huge sums of money to the hospital to thank them. Since then he has gone to many fundraisers and charity events as well constantly giving away money to help charities that focus on children; showing that he himself is a great role model. Another great role model is the Academy Award winner and human rights campaigner Anne Hathaway. Anne Hathaway has been nominated and won many awards and accolades for her incredible acting skills including winning an “Academy Award for Best Actress” for her role in “Rachael Gets Married”. Hathaway is also involved in many charities including: St. Jude’s children’s research hospital and the human rights campaign. In 2007 she spoke of her terrible battle with depression and now goes into many psychological hospitals to help other sufferers get through the condition without medicine or other drugs. This sets a good example to others to follow in her path and try to help out others. Role models do not always come from the lime light or public eye. One of the greatest role models is Sir. Bill Gates. Bill Gates is a business and entrepreneurial genius.
At 13 years old Gates had created his first computer program allowing players to play tic-tac-toe against the computer. Then by age 17 he and his friend had created their very own computer company and had created their first computer processor. He then scored and almost perfect 1590/1600 SAT grade and went onto study at Harvard University; within his second year he dropped out and focused on Microsoft carrying the company to becoming one of the world’s biggest technology powerhouses. In 1994 Bill and his wife Melinda started up their very own charity/foundation called “The Bill and Melinda Foundation” to try and conquer one of the greatest world problems of poverty. In June 2008 Bill left Microsoft to his chief software architect Ray Ozzie for $50 Billion. This put his net worth up to $101 Billion making him the world’s first “cent billionaire”. Bill then worked full time at “The Bill and Melinda Foundation” giving £33.5 Billion of his own money to the charity and creating a deed with Warren Buffet and Mark Zuckerberg; in which they must donate half of their net worth to the charity over a course of time ($42.55 Billion), making the charity the most well-funded foundation in the world. This shows him being very unselfish and shows how he cares about what is going on in the world and to other people. However not every celebrity can be considered a role model. Some people are not famous for any type of talent or great success but are just famous for breaking the law. Paris Hilton is a great example of this. Paris Hilton was born straight into fame from the result of her grandfather William Hilton, the owner of the “Hilton Hotel” empire. Hilton seems to be known for her glamorous lifestyle of jetting off to other countries and partying every night. On February 3rd 2007 a video of Paris rose to the internet of her and her ex-boyfriend having sex. This video also had evidence of Hilton using racist and derogatory words allowing her to be ridiculed in the press as a racist. On January 15th 2007 Paris was caught drink driving doing 70mph in a 35mph zone, her license was also suspended form a previous conviction and led to her being sentenced to 45 days in jail. However Hilton did not end up doing the jail time and instead served 40 days of home confinement, her actions alone do not set a very good example and could she herself could not be easily seen as a role model.
Famous people can also be known for creating trouble. Jordan or Katie Price is known for this. Katie Price is a glamour model who started appearing in the headlines by marrying the singer, songwriter Peter Andre. They met together on the TV show “I’m a Celebrity Get Me out of Here” and eventually married in September 2005. They had 3 children: Harvey, Junior and Princess. However in 2009 they got a divorce after three and a half years of marriage. Throughout the divorce both Andre and Price got constant attention which she appeared to enjoy. However when the attention died down; she started to release information which could have been seen as an attempt to stay in the public eye. She contacted the media to release dramatic private articles; such as stories of her being raped by a “famous celebrity” and claims that Andre had been having secret affairs. This dramatic lifestyle led to her having her own reality TV show in which she goes about her normal everyday life but is followed by a group of cameramen. Celebrities can also be infamous. Charlie Sheen is a great example of this. The actor Charlie Sheen was the highest paid actor on TV being paid $1.25 Million per episode of “Two and a Half Men” and even though his career was at an all-time high, he had a mental breakdown. In January 2011 he returned to rehab for the third time in 12 months. This did not seem to work again however and he publicly made derogatory statements about “Two and a Half Men” and the production crew plus creators. After this he was fired from the show and ended up having a public meltdown, telling the public how he was a “warlock” with “tiger blood”.
He then had many other incidents including pictures of him on top of a roof carrying illegal weapons and taking class A drugs. In conclusion there are some famous people that do nothing but help others and should definitely be looked up to. However, there are also bad celebrity role models that are famous for all of the wrong reasons. In my opinion unless you know them in person you should not be idolizing them. However I do believe there are famous people you should aspire to become like it just depends on the person and what you would like to become.
